The Empire Complex on Spruce Street South on Monday, March 25. A fire devastated the historic building over the weekend.

With donation depots filling up quickly for people affected by this weekend's fire, items are no longer being accepted.

People wanting to help can still make cash donations.

Yesterday, three locations across the city started accepting donations for people displaced by the fire at the Empire Complex apartment building. Those locations are at capacity and material items are not being accepted any longer, the City of Timmins announced this afternoon (March 27). Donations are also not being accepted at the Bon-Air Motel, where some of the residents from the building are being temporarily housed.

"Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board (CDSSAB) is working with tenants to determine what items are actually needed and how material donations will be distributed. The City of Timmins has also confirmed that the building has been turned over to the property owner, who will manage access to the building to collect belongings. This will be done by property management directly with the tenant," reads a City of Timmins news release.

Cash donations are being done through Service Timmins and can be made in-person, by mail or email. The contact for e-transfers is [email protected]

People donating over $20 are eligible for a donation receipt by providing the donor's name and address.

The money will be dispersed to the people affected by the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board (CDSSAB). The organization says staff are assessing the needs of those affected to make sure that the people displaced by the fire benefit directly from the money raised.

"It is important to note that residents should remain vigilant for fraudulent donation requests. The City of Timmins will not contact an individual directly to request a monetary donation, or require that they submit financial information through social media or from an unsecured site," said the city.
