Accused in break-in found walking into traffic on Highway 11: OPP

Police remind people to lock up to keep their property safe

HEARST - A person walking into traffic on Highway 11 is facing charges related to a nearby break-in. 

Around 7:30 p.m. on May 5, James Bay OPP received two calls to police that turned out to be connected. 

The first was for a break-in on Quirion Street in Hearst. While officers were responding to it, another call was made to police to report a person walking into traffic on Highway 11 near the original call for service. 

The person walking on Highway 11 had items taken from the residence that had been broken into, said police. 

"The OPP would like to remind the public that locking the doors of your residence and vehicles can deter would-be criminals an easy opportunity to take your belongings or invade your privacy. Lock it up and keep your property safe," said police in a news release.

A 30-year-old person from Constance Lake First Nation is charged with: 

  • Break and enter a dwelling house - commit indictable offence
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Theft over $5,000
  • Mischief - interfere with any person in the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property over $5,000
  • Mischief under $5,000
  • Unlawfully in dwelling house
  • Possession of an identity document

The accused is in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 10 in Hearst. 

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
