Bumper left at scene after impaired driver hits hydro pole, flees: OPP

Multiple people reporter the vehicle to police

COCHRANE - An erratic driver who hit a hydro pole led to multiple calls to police. 

On April 26 around 8:30 p.m., James Bay OPP received 911 calls about a suspected impaired driver on Third Street East in Cochrane. 

After hitting a hydro pole, police say the bumper was left behind and the driver kept on going. Two further calls were made to police reporting the same vehicle. 

Officers found the vehicle a short time later and determined the driver had been drinking. They were arrested and brought to the Iroquois Falls detachment for more testing. 

A 24-year-old man from Cochrane is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Fail to remain at the scene of an accident
  • Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor
  • Novice driver - B.A.C. above zero

The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 28 in Cochrane. The accused also lost his licence for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

None of the charges have been proven in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
