A headhunting firm has been hired to help find Timmins Police's next chief.

The Timmins Police Services Board has hired Waterhouse Executive Search to help in the process of choosing the next top cop.

Henry Dacosta is currently the acting police chief after Dan Foy's sudden retirement last month. Darren Dinel is the acting deputy chief.

The search process is starting immediately and the board says it's dedicated to being transparent in the process and provide regular updates and communication milestone to members of the service at "appropriate intervals".

"Selecting the next chief of police is a crucial decision for our community. Given the public nature of this leadership position, the board felt it imperative to conduct a full selection process to ensure the voices of the Timmins Police Service members and the community as a whole are heard. Waterhouse Executive Search, with their  proven track record, will ensure a comprehensive and thoughtful selection process to identify a leader who will lead into the Timmins Police Service in the future," said Kraymr Grenke, TPS board chair, in a news release.

Days before Foy — who had been in the position for less than two years — retired last month, the Timmins Police Association voted overwhelmingly in favour of asking the Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) for help to address the staffing crisis and public and officer safety concerns that come with it

The OCPC is a third-party agency that can conduct investigations and resolve disputes about the oversight and provision of policing services.
