Days ahead of the June 2 provincial election, a Timmins candidate is disappointed her signs have been stolen.
Ontario Provincial Confederations of Regions Party candidate Nadia Sadiq was on her way to the Timmins Multicultural Festival on the weekend when she noticed her signs were missing. About 50 of the yellow and green election signs bearing her name are gone.
Sadiq said having the signs stolen is an "extremely disgraceful, shameless and malicious act especially for the first-time grassroots candidate who is trying to make a difference."
In areas where there are clusters of signs, she noted hers are the only ones missing.
"It is extremely disappointing, disturbing and discouraging to see all the signs stolen after almost a month-long hard work of putting them in place by myself and my young children. My kids are equally shocked and disappointed," she said.
Timmins Police has been notified, as well as the local Returning Officer.
Earlier in this campaign, police issued a warning about election sign tampering.
Damaging, stealing or tampering with election signs are actions investigated as a criminal matter, with penalties ranging from fines, periods of probation or custodial sentences, said police. For signs on private property, there is the potential for Trespass to Property Act charges as well.
