Nadia Sadiq wants to give a voice to people's concerns.
A cashier in Kapuskasing, Sadiq is running for the Ontario Provincial Confederation of Regions Party in the June 2 election. She's one of five candidates vying to be the next Timmins MPP.
“They should vote for me because I’m fighting for their own benefit. I’m fighting for their homelessness and their poverty. The thing is that we are the voice of the people, we are the voice that the people have been looking for and we have the loudest voice right now to raise the people’s concerns,” said Sadiq.
This is Sadiq's first time being involved in politics, though her sister has been with the party since 2011.
Homelessness and poverty are a few of the main reasons she's getting involved.
“The thing is that we need to provide more housing — affordable housing, affordable renting, affordable food and affordable gas to the people,” she said.
On the campaign trail, she said she's hearing from single mothers not eating so they can feed their children and seniors finding it hard to stay in their homes because of the rising cost of living.
“We need to stand up for our rights and we need to tell the government that enough is enough, we cannot take it anymore. We cannot live with these ridiculously high heating bills. We cannot live with unaffordable, skyrocketing food prices and we cannot afford these high skyrocketing gas prices for absolutely no reason,” she said.
To help fix the issues, she said there has to be a pay cut for politicians and people working for the government.
“The Timmins people are hardworking people, we all know that. But the thing is that those people are just working hard to pay the ... politicians. We are all working hard to give them a big fat paycheque. Because very little from our own paycheques is left to pay our own family."
The other Timmins candidates are incumbent NDP Gilles Bisson, New Blue David Farrell, Green Elizabeth Lockhard, and PC George Pirie.
