Timiskaming-Cochrane Liberal candidate Rick Ellsmere.

With the Ontario election on Feb. 27, TimminsToday asked each of the candidates three questions. Below are Timiskaming-Cochrane Liberal candidate Rick Ellsmere's responses.

What is the top issue in Timiskaming-Cochrane right now? How would you address it?

One of the biggest issues facing our region is healthcare access. Too many residents struggle to find a family doctor, wait times for specialists are too long, and emergency room closures put added strain on rural communities. As MPP, I would work to increase healthcare funding for Northern Ontario, recruit and retain more healthcare professionals through incentives, and advocate for improved ambulance and emergency services to ensure people can get the care they need when they need it.

How will you be accountable to and represent constituents at Queen’s Park if elected?

Accountability starts with accessibility. I would maintain an open-door policy, ensuring residents can reach me directly. I would also hold regular town halls, both in-person and virtually, to hear concerns firsthand. At Queen’s Park, I would advocate loudly and persistently for the unique needs of our region, whether it’s infrastructure funding, education support, or economic development. My job is to be a strong voice for Timiskaming-Cochrane and ensure our priorities are never overlooked.

What do you want Timiskaming-Cochrane residents to know about you?

I’m deeply committed to our community” not just as a candidate, but as a volunteer firefighter, public works operator, hockey coach, and CASARA member. I understand the challenges we face because I live them every day. I believe in practical, common-sense solutions that put Northern Ontario first. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and work tirelessly to bring real change to our region.

Five people are running in Timiskaming-Cochrane. The other candidates are PC Tory Delaurier, New Blue Stephen MacLeod, Green Kris Rivard, and incumbent NDP John Vanthof

Election day is on Feb. 27. Advance polls are open Feb. 20-22.
