It was a tight race for NDP John Vanthof's fifth win at the polls.
Vanthof has been re-elected as MPP in Timiskaming-Cochrane. He was first elected in 2011.
The race was a tight one, with the unofficial results having Vanthof with 11,245 votes (44.09 per cent), narrowly defeating PC candidate Tory Delaurier, who garnered 9,632 votes.
Reflecting on his victory, Vanthof, who was at the legion in Haileybury when the results came in, acknowledged the competitive nature of the race.
“Obviously, I'm feeling good. It’s always great to end a campaign with a win. I have won five now and lost one, so I know both sides,” he said.
“We knew this was going to be a tough campaign, and it feels good to have the confidence of the people.”
Vanthof also commended all candidates in the riding for their efforts.
“There was competition this time. Stiff competition. And that's what democracy is all about,” he said.
Vanthof, who centred much of his campaign on highway safety, reaffirmed his commitment to the issue.
“We focused this campaign on highway safety because we felt it deserved more attention. Now, with a four-year mandate, we are going to continue working to make the roads safer for everyone,” he said.
When asked what was next on his agenda, Vanthof responded with a touch of humour: “Clean up my signs.”
