Many are hitting the trails to ski in our winter wonderland. This week’s favourite photo made us look back on an exciting event that occurred in the north in February 1933.
Laurie Bearts and Phil Abramson set a record when they skied from Iroquois Falls to Timmins. The 42-mile journey took the pair 11 hours after leaving at 6:15 a.m. from Iroquois Falls. They reached Connaught by 9:15 a.m. where they paused for lunch. They proceeded to Hoyle arriving there at 12:30 p.m. and finally reached South Porcupine at the 35-mile mark at 3:15 p.m.
After an hour and a half break, they did the final leg of their journey to Timmins. Ski artists from the north stated that the trip would be made in nine hours without difficulty. The skiers followed the railway until they reach South Porcupine. From there, they followed along the highway.
