The month of December always feels so busy as we pack the month full of festive activities! In 1941, Christmas looked very different. War was raging in Europe and many from Timmins were serving overseas.
Friday, Dec. 19, 1941, children of Timmins men in service of the war were guests of honour at the Hollinger Hall for a Christmas party. The party was hosted by the Christmas Party section of the Timmins Citizens’ Committee which was headed by Mr. Austin Neame. Members of the Princess Alice Club helped by providing games for everyone to enjoy. Santa Claus himself made his way to the celebration and gave each child a gift.
About 55 children attended the event. Not only did they receive a gift but they also enjoyed ice cream, candy, apples, and oranges — all were donated for this occasion. Mr. Andrew McLeod filled the shoes of Santa for the night as well as decorated the Christmas tree that housed all the gifts for the children.
The Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre regularly provides TimminsToday readers with a glimpse of the city’s past.
