This month, so far, we’ve been looking back on the Ukrainian culture here in Timmins. Concerts and festivals were very popular forms of entertainment and fun in the community so this week, we’re reminiscing about music and dancing events in the Porcupine.
Timmins was home to the Ukrainian Mandolin Orchestra and Dancing School. A talented concert was given by the Ukrainian Mandolin Orchestra of South Porcupine at the Majestic Theatre in September 1929. A comic and a picture, The Royal Rider, were also shown. A Miss Kathleen Reynolds accompanied the concert on piano and Ukrainian dancers provided a performance after the picture. Mary Myronick gave a Ukrainian dance that ended with a grand applause which was followed by more Ukrainian dancers.
In the fall of 1933, The Goldfields Hotel was packed with an audience waiting to watch a concert presented by the Canadian Ukrainian Provista Association of Timmins. A chorus of 28 people, dressed in Ukrainian tradition outfits, performed to the packed house. Under the direction of Harry Storozuk, the chorus gave a number of Ukrainian selections and ended the night with the Ukrainian National hymn.
In the summer of 1946, there was a Ukrainian-Canadian Music Festival held at the McIntyre Arena.
