They have talked about it for a number of years and that process has brought us this year's OFSAA golf championships at the Hollinger.
Colin Sullivan, John Elliott and Owen Rigg are the three people on point for having secured the prestigious event for Timmins.
Sullivan is the coach for the host TH&VS, while Elliott and Rigg are offering support and organizational roles.
While Timmins High is hosting, O'Gorman and Theriault are also playing in the hugely competitive field.
The teams are TH&VS — Brody Dagenais, Jackson Marr, Gage Mackenzie and Ashton Morin. Theriault —Simon Bourdages, Hunter Carriere, Joey Labranche and Logan Fasciano. O'Gorman — Milo Kelly, T.J. Delguidice, Hunter Dunn, Will Kelly and Nathan Boucher.
Timmins is certainly well-represented at these championships.
After the tournament wraps up you will be able to see how the local boys made out when I'll have the final results in next week's column .
The championships started Tuesday and run through Wednesday and Thursday. Although it was a little frosty, Wednesday is predicted to be 9C and Thursday at 14C, so it should make for better playing conditions for the final rounds.
The cooler weather not only affects the comfort level of the golfers, but also has a major effect on ball flight and greens play.
It's a challenge I am sure these up-and-coming golfers will be more than ready to tackle and overcome.
If you get a chance, get out there and support the players, coaches, organizers and volunteers. You will not only see some excellent golf, but will also put on display the traditional level of Timmins support for these major events.
A tip for the Jays
While a lot of Blue Jays fans anxiously await the club’s changes and additions to make them much more competitive, I have one suggestion I think could help.
Sign Francesco Mutti. With the infield in dire need of improvement, Mutti has displayed, to me at least, all the abilities of a solid upgrade. I know some purists will knock him because of his age but I don't think that's relevant here.
You have all seen what I've seen. First, it's his awareness of what is going on around him.
That awareness leads him to quickly realize that the beautiful, fat, ripened tomato is about to roll off the wagon and be squished. With incredible speed and agility, Mutti closes the gap and then makes a brilliant diving leap to make a bare-handed grab of the bright red orb. Frankly (or maybe Francescoly) I'm surprised no other sports columnists have picked up on this.
Check out Mutti's commercial if you aren't familiar with his actions recounted here.
C'mon Jays. Be forward-thinking and outside the box.
Speaking of baseball, every time I see Aaron Judge come to the plate I expect him to hit the ball off the planet. Big 99 just looks like he could do it all day if he felt like it. With that massive frame and cool demeanour, he projects an image of dominance even if he's not hitting that well. When striding to the plate you can feel the intimidation.
And as much as I would like to see the four Canadians on Cleveland win a World Series, I am intrigued by an Ohtani/Judge matchup. And Canadians would still have Freeman to cheer on.
One other note. I love how baseball can run out guys like John Smoltz to do interviews. You know you are about to witness a first-rate interview from a consummate pro that knows how to talk to other pros and get the best out of them.
In this case, nobody does it better than baseball. They have a knack for guys like Smoltz.
Boy, I sure hope that the new basketball rights holders can find a way to get Kenny, Ernie, Shaq and Chuck on the air next season. With TNT no longer in the game, it's time to swallow pride and find a way and a place for the best analysis and commentary show to continue. And I mean the best regardless of the sport.
The Manning Cast in football is a close second, but if the sports premiere show doesn't find a new home, basketball and its fans will be the biggest losers.
Local legend continues to grow
Thanks to my good buddy Keith for reminding me that not only did T.J Luxmore do the opening night banner raising in Florida, he did the game in Sudbury (pre-season) that Elliot Lake secured with last season's well-deserved Kraft Hockeyville win.
A nice touch to have a northern boy do a game with so much meaning to the North.
I got a text and subsequent email from a former player of mine, Brian Bertrand.
Seems the Cochrane native and his brother-in-law Rob Stewart decided at the last minute to fly to Winnipeg to see Sam O'Reilly play for Edmonton in a pre-season game. Here's the kicker. They took a chance because they didn't know if Sam would even be in the lineup.
He was and TSN ran a great video of the Cochrane crew. TSN talked about the gang's attendance at the game, which included Sam's dad Chuck and uncle (and Cochrane native) Eric Rody. Eric now lives in Kenora and is a Jets season ticket holder. The story gets cooler when Rob and Brian ran into an old high school friend named Dawn Landis.
Dawn just happens to be TSN's director for the Jets televised games.
Sam played well and the legend of the Cochrane crew continues to grow in hockey circles.
In the meantime good friends of mine and former teammates Eric Hamilton and Shawn Koshowski attended the Ottawa Senators home opener last week. Both arrived home safely and didn't break anything. All in all, a good time.
Later skater.
