Noah Thorpe was one of many young golfers at the Golf Ontario U17 Juvenile boys and girls championship tournament taking place at Hollinger Golf Club.

TIMMINS - Diane and I had the distinct pleasure of attending the final round of the Golf Ontario U17 Championships at the Hollinger Golf Club.

What an awesome display of golf we witnessed from Ontario's finest youth golfers. And if you think “Well they are just kids" — think again. How many top-notch adult golfers do you know who can hit a 365-yard bomb drive on 18 at the Hollinger?

The tournament was an overwhelming success in all aspects. The players, parents and organizers continually heaped praise upon the event. The course was lauded not only for its quality but its challenging nature. The volunteers excelled at displaying the true spirit of Timmins at its finest. And the one thing you kept hearing was how much participants and their families appreciated the hospitality. It was at the forefront.

Owen Rigg provided this link to access all of the final tournament results.

The quality of events like this and the responses have provided local organizers the impetus to pursue national level events in the future.

I posed the following question to Connor Doyle, the tournament director for the U17 provincial championships and competitions co-ordinator for Golf Ontario

Timmins seems to be on an upward trend when it comes to hosting major golf events. What do you feel are the main factors leading to that trend?

Connor responded, “Timmins is a community that not only rallies behind major golf championships, but they rally behind all major sporting events. The extra work that Hollinger and the City of Timmins put in to make our event and player experience a great success is what will continue to bring major golf tournaments to Timmins. The support from the MAT tax and other local businesses allowed us to bring in a grandstand, enhanced player gifting, plus many other enhancements to the event.”

So congratulations to Golf Ontario, local organizers, sponsors, volunteers, participants and fans for a fantastic experience held here in Timmins.

While Owen and I were discussing the tournament he was excited to tell me of the big fly he launched in a recent Timmins Men's Baseball league game. He also pointed out a very rare and awe-inspiring feat achieved during that game. Pitcher Cedrick Morin faced three hitters in one inning and only needed nine pitches to get all three outs. Nine pitches in total. All strikes. No foul balls. Just nine clean strikeouts for a perfect inning. That my friends is a truly noteworthy achievement.

Last week I was watching an ARCA race. ARCA — the American Racing Club of America — is a stock car series below cup, Xfinity and the truck series. In the race I was watching, history would be made. Well, at least Nascar history. No less than four female drivers would finish in the top 10. Isabella Robusto finished second, Taylor Reimer third, Toni Breidinger sixth and Amber Belcan eighth.

ARCA has seen graduates like Ty Gibbs , Chase Briscoe, Alex Bowman, Ty Dillon, Chris Buescher, Bubba Wallace, Harrison Burton (last weekend's Daytona Cup series race winner) Noah Gregson and Austin Cindric rise through the ranks to NASCAR's top tier the cup series.

Don't forget to follow Meghan Mahon's quest for gold in Paris starting this week.

Mahon and her goalball teammates are anxious to build on winning gold at the PanAm’s from last year onto an even bigger stage at the Paralympic Games, which start today with the opening ceremonies. Mahon isn't participating in the kickoff to the games because they play their first preliminary round game tomorrow (Aug. 29) against France at 8:30 a.m. EST.

Later skater.
