Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus has been asked to join an international panel working to identify and combat disinformation campaigns that are attempting to undermine international efforts to fight COVID-19. The team, put together by British parliamentarian Damian Collins, has established INFOTAGION.COM to identify active disinformation campaigns that are spreading false news on COVID.

Angus says the work is vital to ensuring a strong public response to COVID.

"One of the most vital aspects of maintaining a strong public health response is accurate information on the contagion and how best to contain it. We need to be on guard against active disinformation campaigns that can sabotage public health efforts to contain this virus. These disinformation campaigns are deliberately spreading false information and need to be challenged."

Angus is the one Canadian political representative on the Infotagion team. Angus has been working internationally on issues of online disinformation with colleagues in the UK and the United States. He says he will be working to help expose deliberate falsehoods that are being spread in Canada.

"Like the virus, disinformation knows no boundaries. I am proud to be working with the international community on identifying and shutting down disinformation."

Infotagion.com will serve as a public source for identifying false information in order to ensure people have confidence in the messages being put out by public officials.
