Within two hours of the fire ban being lifted last week, the Timmins Fire Department fielded hundreds of calls.

“Fires in Timmins are something that is very, very popular," said Tom Laughren, Timmins fire chief, yesterday.

"From the minute that was announced on Friday, I’m going to say in the first two hours we had well over 200 calls, probably did 7-or-800 permits over the weekend and we had six calls for service on Saturday related to burning complaints where people did not have a proper burning permit."

For the complaints, he said people were educated and the fires were put out.

The fire ban was lifted May 16.

Due to COVID-19 safety measures, burning permits aren't being issued in person.

Permits for 2019 will be honoured until July 1, 2020.

For people without a 2019 permit who require one, you call the Timmins Fire Department at 705-360-2626. They will register your permit information and instructions for billing will follow.
