VIDEO: Doctor shortage fuels rise of bogus medical info online

This week on our 'Inside the Village' podcast: A new survey finds an alarming number of Canadians are depending on medical misinformation on the Internet because they don't have a primary care provider

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.

On this week's episode: The rise of medical misinformation.

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA), which represents doctors across the country, has released an alarming new report that shows more than one-third of people are getting health information from the Internet because they can’t access a primary care provider.

Forty-two per cent of Canadians have actually tried medical advice they found online, the survey shows, while nearly one quarter — 23 per cent — have experienced a negative reaction after following that advice.

Joining us to talk about the data is Dr. Joss Reimer, president of the CMA. She describes the findings as a "double whammy": a crisis of access combined with a crisis of misinformation.

Also the podcast this week: Let the campaign begin! Sources say Ontario Premier Doug Ford has made up his mind after months of "waffling" and is going to trigger a snap provincial election on Jan. 27.

Stay tuned to your local news site — and our Queen's Park team at The Trillium — for up-to-the-minute election coverage in the weeks to come.
