TimminsToday received the following letter about the article 'Debate about poppy crosswalk lights up online'. In it the Royal Canadian Legion explains that having people walk on the poppy image is deemed disrespectful.
In response to an article regarding a crosswalk for Remembrance Day that no one mentioned that there are different designs for the crosswalk. Poppies are not the only design and I completely understand the reason against that design. We would never want to disrespect our vets, ever.
We all love the giant poppy displayed on the Timmins headframe, but we can do more.
One design I have seen in several cities is the silhouette of a lone soldier on each end of the crosswalk and I think that is a great choice. Maybe critics could have put more thought into their comments and they would have seen that there are other choices.
