The long-awaited confirmation of a new grocery store for the east end is in.
Food Basics is opening a location at the Porcupine Mall.
“We are excited that we can share this news with the community of South Porcupine,” said Paul Bravi, Food Basics senior vice president, in a news release. “We heard the feedback from the people of South Porcupine – and while plans were delayed due to the pandemic – we are thrilled to let you know Food Basics is opening in Porcupine Mall in late 2021.”
Since Metro closed in 2019, which affected 42 employees at the store, there has been speculation in the community about what could go in to replace what was the only chain grocery store in the east end of Timmins. The company said in late 2019, it didn't have plans to open a Food Basics in the space.
In September 2020, a group talked to council about the need for a full-service grocery store at the mall.
Giant Tiger, which is also in the mall, has since expanded its grocery section. In South Porcupine, the Urban Farm also offers a variety of locally-grown food.
In addition to the announcement that Food Basics will be opening, the company is donating $2,500 to the South Porcupine Food Bank.
“This is great news for the community,” said Mayor George Pirie in the news release. “We know that having access to a full-service grocery store is a necessity for residents in our east end and I couldn’t be happier with this outcome. The new location and $3 million-dollar investment verifies Food Basics’ belief in the long-term future of that area. This helps reinforce that our economy is strong and will continue to recover and grow. I want to thank Metro Ontario Inc. for listening to the needs of the community.”
