A Matheson-area gold mine developer has selected a new boss to steer its open-pit project toward production.

Vancouver’s Mayfair Gold promoted from within in appointing Nicholas Campbell as the new CEO, effective Jan. 27. He had been the company’s vice president of capital markets.

Campbell succeeds Darren McLean, who had been serving as CEO since last July. McLean will remain as board chair.

“We are excited for Nicholas to move into the CEO role to lead Mayfair as the Company advances the Fenn-Gib gold project,” said McLean in a news release from last week.

Campbell has 20 years in the mining and metals industry under his belt.

He previously served as vice president of capital markets with Artemis Gold in British Columbia, executive vice president of business development at SilverCrest Metals, and chief financial officer of Goldsource Mines.

“This provides Nick with invaluable experience to help navigate Mayfair as the Company shifts its focus at Fenn-Gib from exploration to development and production,” added McLean.

Fenn-Gib is Mayfair’s only asset, located just off Highway 101 about 20 kilometres east of the town of Matheson. The company posted an indicated gold resource of 4.3 million ounces last September.

Mayfair has carried out a raft of drilling since acquiring the 4,800-hectare property from Pan American Silver in late 2020. A prefeasibility study is underway to define its potential as an open-pit mine. That report is due out in the second half of this year.

“This is an exciting time to lead the Mayfair Gold team,” said Campbell in a statement. “I look forward to working with the Board to advance the Fenn-Gib gold project with a commitment to safety, stakeholder engagement and environmental stewardship.”

Campbell said higher-grade ore looks to be near surface, which, he believes, could improve the economics of the mine project. The development could begin as a small-scale operation with a focus on a high-grade starter zone.
