The Timmins Victor M. Power Airport is receiving a $2.9 million boost to help lighten the pressures faced during the pandemic.

FedNor has announced over $5.8 million for seven northeastern Ontario airports.

“Regional air transportation ecosystems are critical for the thousands of workers employed by this sector and for the businesses and communities that depend on it. We know that air connectivity to all regions is essential to healthy, inclusive growth, and supporting it is part of our plan to build back a stronger, more resilient economy," said Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, in the news release.

The breakdown for the cash is:

  • Timmins, $2.9 million
  • Earlton-Timiskaming Regional Airport Authority, $1.2 million
  • Town of Kirkland Lake, $900,000
  • Municipality of Wawa, $332,264
  • Gore Bay Manitoulin Airport Commission, $187,131
  • Town of Hearst, $140,325
  • Town of Moosonee, $90,000

The non-repayable contributions are for nine initiatives helping to lessen the financial impact of COVID-19 on airport operations, according to the announcement.

In March 2021, the federal government launched the Regional Air Transportation Initiative to support access to air transportation and regional ecosystems. The program helps maintain existing air routes and helps airports in remote regions stay open and adapt to the realities and requirements of COVID-19.
