The pathway along Airport Road is being extended.
Tuesday, Timmins council awarded a $248,630 contract to Interpaving Ltd. to extend the sidewalk 300 metres from Lamminen Boulevard to Bozzer Park.
While the project was not budgeted for this year, the city received $199,460 from Investing in Canada Infrastructure program and the remaining $49,170 will come from the federal gas tax fund. The contract awarded this week does not include installing asphalt. That will be done through a separate contract that is anticipated to be worth $45,000, according to the staff report.
“This project was developed with the cycling committee. So that’s an area that’s got a lot of residential apartments coming that are being constructed, a lot of young families so we decided to extend that,” said Pat Seguin, director of public works and engineering.
One of the reasons the pathway started was to address the safety issue of students walking along Airport Road, he said.
Along with installing the sidewalk, the contract includes re-ditching Airport Road, putting in culverts and planting 24 trees to help beautify the trail. The asphalt is expected to be installed through the separate contract in the spring of 2022.
“That area has got a lot of drainage issues so with this project we are also adding culverts to drain the area through to the west side to the Mattagami River, so there’s a culvert installation across Airport Road that’s included in there,” Seguin explained.
