Be prepared to stop! Signs going back in on Second Avenue

With construction season coming to an end, signs are being reinstalled on Second Avenue at Spruce Street and Balsam Street.

The end of construction season means temporary traffic changes to allow for detours are going back to normal.

Early next week, the City of Timmins expects Algonquin Boulevard to reopen. That means vehicles will once again be stopping on Second Avenue at the intersections of Spruce and Balsam streets.

Drivers should be prepared to stop again on Monday, Nov. 13, says the city.

"Both intersections along Second Avenue will be returned to an all-way or four-way stop with all motor vehicles on approach coming to a complete stop. At a four-way stop, the first vehicle to come to a complete stop has the right-of-way. If two or more cars stop at the same time, right-of-way goes to the vehicle on the right," reads a City of Timmins news release.

Two sections of the Connecting Link were worked on this year.

Riverside Drive from Shirley Street to Government was reconstructed and a sidewalk was installed on the north side of the road from the Timmins Square to the Government Road intersection, where the Home Depot plaza is.

That reopened earlier this week, and the city had a ribbon cutting for the new sidewalk on Nov. 8.

For the downtown segment, the work scheduled on Algonquin was from Wilcox to Cedar.

The City of Timmins update says that work has been completed to just east of Balsam Street, which is a block away from the goal.

Next year is the final year of a $27.9 million, three-year contract with R.M. Belanger Ltd. to reconstruct Algonquin Boulevard from Theriault to Brunette Road.

The 2024 work will start where this year's project ended and extend east. It includes removing the overpass and putting in a snowmobile crossing at Hollinger Park.

Work on the Mattagami and Porcupine river bridges is also planned for next year.
