Laneway behind Scotiabank becomes one-way

TIMMINS — City Council has approved a request to officially deem the laneway behind Scotiabank, from Pine Street towards Cedar Street, a one-way.

With the support of the Business Improvement Area Manager, city staff solicited comments from 14 neighbouring property owners/businesses.

Staff reviewed and considered various options, and the final decision and vote from council came back on Monday, December 12 – to make this entire portion of laneway into a one-way.

The decision was not made in haste, as the concern was brought to council in mid-October, followed by studies and the collection of neighbourhood input.

“We have considered one-way lanes for all the laneways in the downtown area, but concerns arose among some business owners about which direction the lanes should run,” explained Director of Engineering Luc Duval. “This is something we will look at in the future, but the one behind Scotiabank was considered a priority, and the east-to-west direction is the one that is favoured in this area.”

Staff have started installing posts and signage, with the change taking effect Thursday, December 21.
