Guy Bourguoin has been nominated again to be the the NDP candidate for Mushkegowuk—James Bay in the next Ontario election.

MUSHKEGOWUK-JAMES BAY - Another candidate has been named for the next Ontario election.

Guy Bourgouin is carrying the NDP banner for Mushkegowuk-James Bay when the writ drops for the provincial election.

Bourgouin is the current MPP for the riding and was first elected in 2018. He lives in Kapuskasing with his wife Manon, and is a trained tradesperson.

"I am proud to fight for northern communities every day at Queen’s Park, and excited to keep building a better future for the people of Ontario. It’s time our province had a government focused on true reconciliation and prosperity for the Indigenous people of Mushkegowuk-James Bay. Let’s work together to keep fighting for good jobs, safer roads, more access to French language services, and better health care for Northern Ontario," said Bourgouin in a news release.

Highway safety has been a priority for him.

He's fought to improve winter road maintenance in Northern Ontario, and has tried to introduce legislation to make it illegal to pass on a solid double line. He's currently the NDP critic for Francophone Affairs.

“Northern Ontarians deserve representatives who are fighting for real change, and Guy is that person,” said Marit Stiles, Ontario NDP Leader, in the announcement.

“He works hard and fights relentlessly for the community he represents. He has been a strong advocate for French language services, good union jobs, safe northern roads, and more. He has held the government to account when it comes to treaty rights and working with Indigenous communities standing up for their rights, including informed prior consent in developing the North. With Guy, the communities in Mushkegowuk-James Bay will have a strong voice at Queen’s Park! I am so proud to have him on my team as we build a better, brighter future for the people of Ontario!”

Riding associations across the region have been working to secure candidates.

Provincially, people will head to the polls in June 2026 at the latest.

Premier Doug Ford has not ruled out calling an early election, though. He has given sitting MPPs until December to say if they're running again.

In Timiskaming-Cochrane, veteran NDP MPP John Vanthof was recently nominated to run for the party again.
