Bus Buddies program helps kids get used to rides to school

Goal is to reduce anxiety for schoolchildren and for their parents

Local police are helping first-time bus riders get ready for school.

This week, Timmins Police officers stopped by the annual Bus Buddies event at École catholique St-Dominique's.

The program is free and police say it helps the young students get comfortable with basic school bus-related safety rules and how to behave while riding the bus.

"They can be easily intimidated by their first rides on the school bus which is on the horizon for a large number of local youngsters. This event allowed for first-time riders to become familiar with the school bus itself and how to properly embark and disembark from a school bus in a safe and orderly fashion," said police in a news release.

"It also helped reduce the anxiety level for nervous parents as well. All children, and parents of children, were cheerfully greeted by program volunteers and Timmins Police officers and special constables engaging in their first community policing efforts."
