NEWS RELEASE
THE CITY OF TIMMINS
*************************
The City of Timmins, in conjunction with the Timmins Police Service and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, are reminding residents that our black bears are waking up from hibernation, and as more people stay home, it is possible to see an increase in wildlife activity in urban areas.

Residents are being reminded to put their waste and/or recycling out only on the morning of collection day, by no later than 7:30 a.m., and to store waste containers in a bear-proof location such as your basement, a sturdy shed, or garage. Spraying your waste carts and lids with bleach or another strong disinfectant will also deter wildlife from rummaging in your refuse. If you do not have curbside pickup, it is recommended to take your waste to the landfill often.

According to the MNRF: “Garbage is the main reason why bears are drawn into communities… This is not good for you, for your neighbours or for bears.”

Other popular attractants to bears include bird feeders, barbecues, fruits and berries and pet food:

  • Offer birds natural alternatives such as flowers and nesting boxes
  • Burn off food residue and wash your grill. Empty the grease trap after every use, and remove all utensils, dishes and food after eating
  • Pick all ripe and fallen fruit on your property
  • Do not leave pet food outdoors, in screened-in areas or porches

To report a non-urgent bear problem, call: -

  • 1-866-514-2327
  • TTY: 705-945-7641

In a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
