City tightens up traffic bylaw around east-end high school

Council reacts to safety concerns from South Porcupine residents

Timmins city council has acted on a safety request from concerned parents in the East End.

Council has passed a traffic bylaw dealing with parking and speed limits around Roland Michener Secondary School in South Porcupine.

The report from the city’s public works department recommended implementing a no-parking zone on the east side of Legion Drive from Shamrock Street to Powell Avenue. It also called for an adjustment to the 40 km/hr speed zone to start at a point 150 meters south of the school property.

“Residents of South Porcupine have petitioned the City of Timmins for changes to Legion Drive in regards to safety concerns for students at Roland Michener Secondary School,” the report read.

Prior to the bylaw being passed, the 40 km/hr zone began 30 metres south of the school property, running 160 metres north of the site. The provincial traffic manual calls for the zone to start 150 metres from a school.

There were also concerns that the stretch of Legion Drive lacked a gutter bank and wide shoulder, which is normally used for parking.

Councillor Mickey Auger agreed with the changes.

“It’s very narrow in the winter time with snowbanks,” he said. “Kids are walking there."
