After 53 days on strike, CUPE has struck a deal with the Town of Cochrane.
Today (Sept. 22), CUPE Local 71 took to its Facebook page to make the announcement that employees will return to work on Monday.
“We, the employees of the Town of Cochrane, have voted in favour of the latest offer that was negotiated by both parties. We understand that the last eight weeks have been a struggle for the Town of Cochrane’s residents, therefore we feel that this is the best compromise for the employees as well as the residents,” reads the post.
“We want to thank you for your continued support throughout the entire process. We look forward to providing quality services again.”
About 60 people from the CUPE Local 71 who work in Cochrane's fire department, corporate services, public works, parks and recreation and daycare have been on strike since July 31.
“It was a long road but our members stayed on it and kept the pressure on the Town of Cochrane, and now we have a new contract that ends the strike,” said Lyne Nolet, CUPE Local 71 president in a news release.
“I’m so proud of the members and of the bargaining committee. Now we look forward to getting back to work on Monday to deliver the services the residents of Cochrane depend on.”
