COCHRANE - A northern town has welcomed a new physician to its local healthcare team.

The Cochrane Family Health Team announced the addition of Dr. Mona Mohamed to their practice, following a visit to the community in March 2024.

The healthcare team announced the news on Oct. 15 on Facebook.

“Dr. Mohamed is an outgoing, kind and caring physician with a true passion for medicine,” they wrote.

Patients will not be able to register with the new doctor just yet and there will be no waitlist until further notice.

“We respectfully ask that all patients interested in registering as a patient with Dr. Mohamed wait patiently for a secondary announcement reflecting all registration details in the near future,” they wrote.

TimminsToday reached out to the Cochrane Family Health Team but did not receive a response. Its website indicates that the addition Mohamed will increase the team to two physicians.

In her message to the Cochrane community, Mohamed shared her commitment to improving healthcare.

“My personal story is one of dedication and passion, driven by a desire to enhance patient care and advance medical understanding,” she wrote.

With experience practicing medicine in Egypt, Mohamed said she has developed a unique understanding of common medical issues and follows established treatment protocols.

Mohamed said she offers comprehensive healthcare services for patients of all ages, including routine health screenings, chronic disease management, and mental health support.

Mohamed emphasized preventative care through vaccinations and health promotion, aiming to improve her patients' overall well-being.

“I build trust and foster a strong doctor-patient relationship, creating a safe and non-judgmental environment that encourages open discussion and honest feedback,” she said.

Mayor Peter Politis expressed excitement about the new physician’s arrival.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Mohamed and her family to our community. This achievement reflects significant rethinking and collaboration among the Family Health Team, the hospital, and the town regarding our physician attraction efforts,” he told TimminsToday

Politis acknowledges that while the community celebrates this milestone, there is still work to be done to overcome barriers to healthcare access.

Throughout the last week of September, another prospective physician toured Cochrane, Black River-Matheson, and Iroquois Falls, as part of ongoing efforts to attract healthcare professionals to Northern Ontario.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts between the three municipalities to recruit physicians to the north.

In February, they teamed up to create Frontier Spirit Physician Recruitment, a not-for-profit corporation established in hopes of helping recruit physicians to the north.
