When Ontario drops its mask mandate next week, Northern College is following suit.

Most provincial masking requirements are lifting March 21, when students return to school after March Break. Next Monday, masking will only be required on public transit, long-term care and retirement homes, healthcare settings and other similar public locations. All masking requirements are set to lift on April 27.

While public school boards are being told to follow the provincial direction for masking and not implement their own policies, some post-secondary institutions have chosen to keep mask mandates in place.

In Timmins, Northern College announced today that it will eliminate its on-campus mask mandate on March 21. The statement says that students and staff are encouraged to wear a mask.

“While we are removing the blanket policy, we continue to encourage those attending our campuses to exercise whatever personal preventative measures they feel most comfortable with,” said Audrey Penner, Northern College president and CEO, in a news release.

Disposable masks will be available at each campus.

"The college will continue to make policy changes in concert with government and health authority directions to keep everyone as well as possible as the pandemic continues to unfold," reads the release.
