COVID-19 outbreak at Kirkland Lake Gold

Health unit says the situation continues to be under investigation

A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Kirkland Lake Gold.

The Timiskaming Health Unit made the announcement today, but did not disclose the number of cases at the mine.

"The Timiskaming Health Unit is working closely with KL Gold to ensure all necessary contact tracing and testing is being completed. KL Gold is taking all the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID-19," reads the announcement.

"The situation continues to be under investigation, and more information will be provided as needed. If you have been identified as a close contact of a positive case you already have, or will be contacted by public health."

There are currently five active outbreaks in the Timiskaming Health Unit region that covers from Kirkland Lake to Temagami. 

The other outbreaks are at Ecole catholique St-Michel in New Liskeard, Nor-Arc Steel Fabricators, Temiskaming Printing, and Englehart Public School.

To date in the Timiskaming Health Unit region, there have been 451 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Of those, 403 are resolved and three people have died. There are 45 known active cases.
