A change in funding is allowing Digital Creator to include new people in its programming.
For the new cycle that started in June, the free maker space has opened up some of its programs to adults.
Digital Creator launched in 2018 and offers structured workshops along with drop-in sessions. Up until now the events had been for teens.
Heidi Vandenbroeke said she had been getting inquiries from adults interested in honing their skills.
“There had been inquiries and under the structure of the program previously, and mostly due to the confines of our funding, we weren’t able to branch out to adult programming," she said.
With a change in funding and it now coming from the Canada Council for the Arts, when a new cycle of the program started in June she was able to introduce programs geared to people 17 years and up into the schedule.
The first was a digital video editing session, followed by a graphic design program.
“The first two, I kind of went with my strengths ‘cause I knew I would be able to have the ability to lead a good workshop in those areas. Also those were some inklings that I had gotten from folks about they were interested in,” she said.
At the first session, she said it most of the participants had a background in some form of media studies and were looking for a refresher.
“It’s a nice gateway in and I kind of hope to spark some of that passion that they had before,” she said.
For some, she said the programming will be more fluid and have themes.
Adult drop-in sessions for anyone 17 years and older are Thursday nights from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in the Digital Creator Space in the Timmins Museum.
The upcoming themes for those nights are manual mode on July 4, an open studio July 18, and podcasting 101 July 25.
The space is closed July 9 - 17.
