If you've been collecting your old batteries throughout the year, it's almost time to properly dispose of them. Take note of the new location this year, though.

The annual household hazardous and special waste drop-off in Timmins is on Saturday, June 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the snow dump on Spruce Street South. No textiles or household items are being collected.

“Hazardous waste like old paint and pesticides are not accepted with regular garbage collection or at the landfill,” said environmental co-ordinator Christina Beaton in a news release.

“The substances can contaminate soil and groundwater, so specific collection and containment methods are required to help protect the environment. Residents have the opportunity to get rid of hazardous items at no charge, and without leaving their car. It’s a quick, drive-thru system, with volunteers removing the waste from each vehicle.”

The items being collected include:

  • Paint
  • Flammable/Misc. organics
  • Aerosols
  • Single use batteries
  • Single use propane cylinders and refillable propane tanks
  • Oxidizers
  • Pesticides
  • Antifreeze
  • Oil filters
  • Inorganic acids and bases
  • Fuel and oil
  • Pathological waste (sharps)
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Compact fluorescents and fluorescent tubes
  • Household electronics

Volunteers are also still needed to help out at the event. Students can earn their hours at it. Register by emailing [email protected].

The city couldn't find a partner for the textile and household items collection this year. The city is looking for someone to provide a year-round service.

The new location is temporary due to redevelopment of the Golden Manor.

To get there, take Pine Street South, then turn east on Iroquois Road and follow the one-way traffic to the drop-off point. Traffic will exit on Spruce Street.
