A day of activities is taking over downtown Timmins later this month.

The Downtown Timmins BIA is having a winter carnival Saturday, Feb. 22.

Council approved a number of items to allow the festivities to take place.

Third Avenue will be closed from Spruce Street South to Cedar Street South, including the Pine Street intersection, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will allow for dog sled demonstrations, a Beavertails truck and maple sugar taffy on snow. A farmers' market will be set up in a building, and there will be other events at participating businesses.

To make sure there is no exposed brick on the road for dog sledding, the city will also bring in snow for the centre lane of traffic if needed.

"This will happen only once the street is closed off. The street will be returned to its previous state before reopening," reads a letter to council from Jamie Roach, Downtown Timmins BIA president.
