NEWS RELEASE
RED CROSS OF TIMMINS
*************************
Locally, the Timmins Branch of the Canadian Red Cross currently administers funding and program supports to 89 schools from Kashechewan and Moosonee to New Liskeard, including 22 schools right here in Timmins. In 2015, 15,135 students benefitted from 1,314,123 snacks and morning meals, contributing to a positive learning environment for the healthy development of children and youth.
This week, student nutrition programs are canvassing their school communities for help in sustaining their programs with in kind donations of healthy whole grain cereal and milk money.
“The ‘Bowlful of Breakfast’ campaign is a way to lever the seed money provided by the Government of Ontario to greater advantage” says Rena Keenan Buhler, Food and Logistics Coordinator for the Red Cross Student Nutrition Program. “Programs thrive on the contributions of time and money from parent volunteers, and the Bowlful of Breakfast Cereal Drive gives families another way to contribute to the success of programs, through the donation of healthy whole grain cereal. The ‘Bowlful of Breakfast’ Campaign will provide needed in-kind support to help schools sustain their programs” adds Student Nutrition Program Lead Sylvie Dicaire.
In some schools, the cereal drive is underway as a challenge to build the tallest strongest structure from cereal boxes collected, or even as an exploration of geometrical shapes.
On Saturday, Nov. 19 the campaign moves into the community with the cereal drive on location at Dailey’s Independent Grocers in Timmins. Shoppers will be invited to consider a donation of cereal or even a financial donation that can be earmarked for a participating school. Donations and volunteer enquiries from the public are welcome. For more information about the upcoming Cereal Drive or about Student Nutrition Programs in general, please contact Rena Keenan Buhler or Maggie Vaughan at 705 267-4900.
