The First Baptist Church is getting a boost thanks to a Timmins Chamber of Commerce's Business Takes the Lead initiative.

Every quarter, the group has been raising money for local charities through 100 People Who Care.

The First Baptist Church is the third donation made through the program.

Business Takes the Lead Chair Dan Ayotte said the $5,900 is for the church to upgrade kitchen appliances for its community kitchen and cooking programs.

Amber Elliott is the food bank co-ordinator at First Baptist.

She explained the church is currently offering meals on Friday and Tuesday.

“The kitchen needs a little help because we’re serving so many every week. This is definitely a real blessing,” she said.

For the 100 People Who Care initiative, businesses commit to donating $100 and the pooled amount is donated to a charity voted on by the participating businesses. Each quarter there is the potential to donate $10,000.

“We unfortunately struggled this time to find 100 donors,” said Dan Ayotte, Business Takes the Lead chair.

At the chamber's general quarterly membership meeting, he asked for support for the new round of the donations, with several business stepping up already.
