Christmas at Hollinger Park marked the first in a series of monthly family-oriented events set for the next year. It also marked the first major event held at the city’s revamped park.
The Timmins Community Park Association (TCPA) organized and hosted Saturday’s activities, which included winter fun such as snow fort building, marshmallow roasting, fresh taffy, music, hot chocolate and, of course, a visit from Santa.
“We’re here today for the TCPA’s first event of 12 planned for the 2019-20 year,” said Mark Rogers of the TCPA. “Today we are just kicking off the Christmas season.”
The events will be held at a variety of locations across the city. He noted that future activities at Hollinger Park in the winter will include snowshoe racing and plank racing.
“The events we have planned will be posted on our website, once it’s ready, and also the city’s website,” Rogers said. “We’ll be running an event the third Saturday of each month, starting today and going to next November. Then we’ll start all over again.”
The goal of the organization is to get families to spend a little more outdoor time and a little less screen time.
“We want the community to come out and have fun. We want family groups to come out and enjoy the outdoors,” he said. “Timmins is a beautiful spot in the spring, summer, winter and fall. We want to get families doing things together. We want to get families out, be more active and enjoy the weather.”
The skating rink at the Hollinger Park is being created and maintained by the city. While it is not yet ready, the city will announce when it is ready to open.
The TCPA has obtained a warming trailer for the skating season at the park, through a donation from Newmont Goldcorp.
