Find out who picked up this year's NAN Keewaywin Awards

The annual awards celebrate the achievements and dedication of NAN members

People from across Treaty 9 are being recognized for a variety of reasons. 

Nishnawbe Aski Nation's (NAN) 42nd Annual Keewaywin Conference is being held this week in Constance Lake First Nation. On Wednesday (Aug. 14), the Keewaywin Awards were handed out. 

The annual awards celebrate the achievements and dedication of people across the NAN territory. 

This year's award winners are:

  • Norma Kejick, Lac Seul First Nation - Emile Nakogee Award for Outstanding Leadership 
  • Lucy Kakegamic, Keewaywin First Nation - NAN Elder Award
  • Eartha Davidson, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (transferring to Muskrat Dam First Nation) - NAN Woman Award
  • Adonia Dunwell, Flying Post First Nation - NAN Youth Award (Leadership)
  • Aurora Gull, Peawanuk (Weenusk) First Nation - NAN Youth Award (Community Involvement)
  • Ramon Kataquapit, Attawapiskat First Nation - NAN Youth Award (Cultural)
  • Trentin Thomas, Mattagami First Nation - NAN Youth Award (Academic)
  • Luke Hunter, Peawanuk (Weenusk) First Nation - NAN Staff Recognition Award
  • Constance Lake First Nation - Host Community Award

The conference started on Aug. 13 and wraps up today (Aug. 15). 

On the second day, Alvin Fiddler from Muskrat Dam First Nation was re-elected as the NAN Grand Chief.

The deputy grand chiefs include Anna Betty Achneepineskum from Marten Falls First Nation, Mike Metatawabin from Fort Albany First Nation, and Bobby A. Narcisse from Aroland First Nation.

The new executive council will serve a three-year term.
