Representatives from the Timmins Fire Department (TFD) and Timmins Professional Firefighters Association (TPFFA) attended the new Breast Wellness Centre at Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) on December 15, 2015 for a cheque presentation.

Presenting the $2,167.61 cheque on behalf of the firefighters were Scott Atkinson, President, Timmins Professional Firefighters Association and Chief Mike Pintar, Timmins Fire Department.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the hospital was Tina Bilodeau, Coordinator of Breast Imaging Services along with a few other Registered Medical Radiation Technologists in Mammography Ann Donaldson, SherriLynn Andrews, Cindy Basso and Kelly Osmar.

In October 2014, the TFD and TPFFA joined forces for their first ever “Pink T- shirt Fundraiser” to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Special pink t-shirts were designed and printed locally and sold for $20 each.

The firefighters wore the pink t-shirts as part of their uniforms every Monday and Friday for the month of October to promote awareness.

They raised a total of $1,200 which was donated to the TADH Foundation to help with the construction of the new Breast Wellness Centre.

This year’s “Pink T-shirt Fundraiser” exceeded their original fundraising goal of $1,200 having more than doubled t-shirt sales from last year.

Due to the overwhelming demand of the coveted original pink t-shirts, sales continued through to the end of the month of November.

The firefighters sold a total of 247 shirts and raised $2,167.61 for the newly-constructed Breast Wellness Centre at TADH

“Our members were proud to participate in this breast cancer awareness campaign once again this year,” stated Scott Atkinson, President, Timmins Professional Firefighters Association. “When it comes to helping the citizens of this community, the Timmins Professional Firefighters Association and the Timmins Fire Department try and do all we can, and that is why we chose to donate to our local hospital,” continued Atkinson.

“Breast cancer has touched every one of us and our families in different ways and we have found a great way to raise awareness and funds to benefit our community,” stated Chief Mike Pintar, Timmins Fire Department. “Cancer affects people all over the world; however, we all felt it would have a greater impact and benefit if we supported local endeavours,” added Pintar.

“We are very grateful to the Timmins Fire Department and the Timmins Professional Firefighters Association for raising funds and creating awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” stated Tina Bilodeau, Coordinator of Breast Imaging Services, TADH. “Many thanks for their continued support and donation to the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation for our new Breast Wellness Centre,” added Bilodeau.

From the James Bay coast to Engleheart, from Hearst to Kirkland Lake, Timmins and District Hospital is the beating heart of a vast, beautiful and vibrant region.

We hold the well-being of over 115,000 people in our hands...and they, in turn, hold our fate in theirs.

As the largest hospital in Northeast Ontario, TADH is poised on the brink of a new era in healthcare for this region.

To meet the growing and changing needs of the families we serve, the facilities and equipment of our hospital must be renewed. Not years from now, but now.

Outdated, cramped, with an aging building and obsolete equipment, TADH is long past due for a revitalization that will enable us to take our District’s healthcare into the 21st century.
