The Ministry of Natural Resources and Foresty for the Timmins Kirkland Lake District is advising residents that a flood warning is in effect until Friday, May 12.
Anyone near Minisinakwa Lake including low-lying areas of Gogama should keep a close watch on conditions, regularly check for updated messages, and stay away from fast-moving rivers and streams, according to a news release. Residents should be aware that localized flooding may occur.
Significant amounts of precipitation has been received over the last five days in the Timmins and Gogama areas. With soil conditions still partially frozen and saturated from previous rainfalls, surface run-off is causing water levels to rise in lakes and rivers.
Minimal precipitation and warmer temperatures are forecast for the next five days. Some snowpack is remaining and the flow from local streams remains high. The exact extent of flooding is difficult to predict at the current moment as it will depend on the weather and flow rates over the next few days.
