The South Porcupine Food Bank has launched its Thanksgiving Appeal.
They've set an $11,000 goal, which would cover about two months of operating costs for the organization located on Main Street.
Treasurer Peter Davis said the money is for operating costs such as rent and utilities.
“The other thing is all the perishable food items we generally buy, so margarine, milk, bread, fresh produce,” he said.
On average this year, he said 254 people (163 adults and 91 children) use the food bank every month.
With winter on its way, he said they'll likely be looking at an increase in numbers.
“Generally speaking we tend to see a trend going up then and I can’t say it’s really any particular age group, we get everyone from basically young adults — singles and with families — up to seniors,” he said. “The need is definitely there.”
If you can't make a cash donation, there are other ways to help out.
In October, the food items most in need are large soups like Habitant, medium soups, fruit cups, canned fruit, tuna, Hamburger Helper, stew, Sidekicks, ketchup, and apple juice.
“The bottom line is that food security is still an ongoing problem in Timmins and we’re all trying to do our part to fix it and to meet the need,” he said.
