Former mayor could be appointed new fire chief

Council also looking to name Tom Laughren the city's Community Emergency Management Co-ordinator

A former mayor could be the city's new fire chief.

An item on the Tuesday, April 9 council agenda includes appointing Tom Laughren as the fire chief.

Laughren is a former mayor and councillor, and a volunteer with the Whitney Volunteer Fire Department. He is currently director of corporate responsibility at Tahoe Resources.

There is also a bylaw to appoint Laughren as the Community Emergency Management Co-ordinator for the City of Timmins.

In March, former fire chief Norm Beauchamp tendered his resignation after being out of office since the fall. At the time of that announcement, CAO Dave Landers aid Deputy Chief Ellard Beaven has been leading the department.

Beauchamp took over the position in October 2017 when Mike Pintar retired.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.
