A jam-packed month of free events is scheduled to help get families to Power Off and Play.

The Healthy Kids Community Challenge has released its August calendar, which features some favourites from July as well as new activities.

Every day of the month there is at least one free activity being offered for kids up to 13 years old and their families.

Returning events include Tuesdays’ tennis club, the farmers’ market scavenger hunt on Thursday, mini putting on Friday, and Kids’ Saturdays at the Museum

“Some new things that we have coming up in August is a kayak clinic and rental. What that is an hour of kayak lessons, so safety, basic paddling and then the participants will get an hour rental to go out on their kayaks on the Mattagami River,” said project manager Madison Mizzau.

“We’ve also added a dreamcatcher workshop where kids can make their own dreamcatcher, we’ve added a make your own talking stick as well, so we’re trying to bring some traditional activities.”

For the Great Canadian Kayak Challenge at the end of the month, she said they will be on hand with the smoothie bike.

So far, she said the activities have been going over really well this summer.

“We’ve had a great response, the community really appreciates having some free things to do here. It’s one of the things that we heard most within out think tanks and our community needs assessment, so we really are happy to be able to provide that for families in the summertime when kids are off school it can be kind of hard to find things to do, especially every day without cost being an issue. This is something that we’re really proud to be able to offer the community,” she said.

The full calendar of activities is available on the Health Kids Community Challenge Facebook page.
