Friendly match serves up support for food bank

Timmins Police officers and local students, teachers squared off on the volleyball court

A local food bank scored some donations thanks to a friendly match between students and police officers.

The match came about thanks to Mason Martin, who is the son of Timmins Police Const. Bill Martin. He approached his dad suggesting that they do something to support the Timmins Food Bank.

Earlier this week, officers used their own time to stop by Pinecrest Public School for a volleyball match against students and teachers at the school. Admission was a donation to the food bank.

"Each game was a real nail-biter but in the end the Timmins Police took the Pinecrest teachers to school on the finer points of high-intensity volleyball," said police in a news release.

"The students proved to be a much tougher match up against the Timmins Police squad."

Rick Young from the food bank was on hand to collect the donations.

"Thanks to each of the officers, with special acknowledgement given to young Mason Martin, for their collective efforts in regards to this charitable initiative," said police.
