The Board of Directors for the Timmins Native Friendship Centre is pleased to announce Mickayla Bird as the organization's new executive director.

Mickayla Bird was born and raised in Timmins and holds fond memories and a strong connection to her Cree community of Peawanuck First Nations, located along the Hudson Bay coast. She is passionate about building healthier relationships with children and their families by following Indigenous culture and core values. Mickayla has been a part of the Friendship Centre Movement as a child attending programming, youth drop-ins, traditional healing programs and while briefly living in Sault Ste. Marie Ont., completed her high school education. Through these experiences she found her connection to spiritual wellbeing and identiry. Mickayla is a wife and mother to two children who keep her busy with basketball and soccer.

Mickayla began her professional journey with the Timmins Native Friendship Centre in June of 2009 where she spent several years employed at our daycare, Oppekehawaso Wekamik. Upon returning from maternity leave, she made the switch from childcare to Administration with a position as the human resources/executive assistant trainee. Following this short term placement, she secured the position of Executive Assistant in 2015. Mickayla takes on this new role of executive director after being one of two acting executive directors since March 2017. Mickayla currently sits on the Living Space Board and is dedicated to serve the community in a 'wholistic approach' with an emphasis on education and culture.

Mickayla will assume the executive director position on July 8, 2019.
