PETER POLITIES, MAYOR OF COCHRANE

COCHRANE – Cochrane’s winter carnival is the oldest premier winter carnival in Ontario, while also boasting one of the largest selections of activities.

On the evening of Thursday, February 12, 2015 the Carnival kicks off the grand finale weekend to the 10 day event that started on February 6.

And the kick-off will be the completely unique and spectacular Torch Light Parade.

The parade consist of all the children in the community carrying live torches constructed by the local volunteer fire department to the peninsula on Lake Commando, where they are tossed into a massive bon fire made primarily from the past season’s Christmas trees.

The bon fire, amassing a size similar to two full sized garages stacked on top of each other and another and two wide, is clearly a spectacle in itself.

However, to see almost 1,000 torched in the evening, stretched in two massive processions waling to the lake, one form the west and one from the east, is one of the most impressive spectacles the North has to offer.

Since its inception in Cochrane in 1963, people from all over the province come to witness this event that symbolizes the core of our fabulous way of life – the heat and glow of a fire in the crisp cold northern air, under massive sky of stars.

Cochrane Mayor, Peter Politis didn’t hesitate to exude his excitement over the event.

“We have the greatest way of life in the best backyard on the planet and what could be more northern than a massive community fire in the crisp, clean and pure cold air of the North? In today’s day and age, where else would you see such an impressively coordinated activity where families carry live torches, constructed by local volunteers and enjoy an evening by a fire as massive as this?”

Jessica Stere, the Carnival Committee Chair echoed the Mayor’s enthusiasm and added, “This is a true community event that clearly demonstrates the amazing community spirit in the town.”

The Carnival grand finally weekend runs right through to Monday, February 16 and will exhibit the grander of this provincial event.
