Grass fire closes South Porcupine school, students evacuated

The blaze was in the field south of the highway between Northern College and Huot Street

A grass fire in South Porcupine led to an emergency school closure.

At 12:20 p.m. today (May 16), St. Joseph School on Huot Street was closed due to a nearby grass fire, the Northeastern Catholic District School Board said in a Facebook post.

"Students and staff safety is our number one priority and all students and staff have been evacuated to the Timmins Finnish Seniors’ Home where students will be picked up," reads the post.

The fire is now out. It was in the field south of Highway 101 between Northern College and Huot Street, close to the trails around Porcupine Lake.
