HEARST – A Tyler Patterson tally past the midway point of the second period held up as the game-winner Friday as the Hearst Lumberjacks downed the Timmins Rock 5-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Claude Larose Recreation Centre.
Visiting Timmins began the scoring just 95 seconds into the proceedings when Kaeden McArthur banked in a loose puck off an Ayden Trottier attempt from the point on Hearst’s Alexander Boivin.
Tying it up late in the first frame, the Lumberjacks’ William Pâquet beat Rock netminder Dryden Riley with a low shot from a sharp angle while working his way down the left side.
Early in the second stanza, Hearst captain Adam Shillinglaw round the range 41 seconds in as he put a rising attempt from up top through traffic that sailed into the top left-hand corner that Riley could not locate in time.
The 105th NOJHL goal by veteran Lumberjacks forward Patterson made 3-1 at 11:53 as he took a nice cross-crease pass from Ty McKay and slammed it in.
Pulling back to within one with a man advantage effort, Jack Kelly scooped up the leftovers off a Reece Liu chance and potted his team-leading 28th tally.
Kelly now has points in eight straight outings for Timmins.
Staying tight right until the late going, Hearst put the game away with a shorthanded empty-net effort off the stick of McKay before Liam Boswell converted in the final minute with a sharp wrist shot into the left corner for his 15th of the year.
