BLACK RIVER-MATHESON - This year's water and sewer hikes in Black River-Matheson have been approved.

The increase approved at a meeting on Tuesday (July 23) is 3.9 per cent.

The hike means a flat rate for a private house or apartment annually for water is $670 and $609 for sewer. For annual water and sewer fees and charges for multi-residential properties (two or more units), each individual unit will be charged the flat rate.

For 2023, the township’s annual water fees and charges for multi-residential properties were $645 per unit while sewage fees and charges were $586 per unit.

Based on the rates approved this week, the town is expected to bring in an additional $25,409 for water and $82,050 for wastewater this year.

The municipality hasn’t passed its budget yet, but is currently considering a 11.46 per cent tax levy increase. This would mean a net budget of $7,325,402.

The most costly of the service increases the town is considering in the proposed budget is $293,500 for staffing wage and benefit increases.

Last year, the municipality approved a 34 per cent tax hike.
