A new year means the cost of some city services is on the rise.
From a burial permit to a wedding license, parking, to tipping fees at the dump — the cost to access required services from the City of Timmins is increasing on Jan. 1. Council of the day approved the changes in December 2020.
At the landfill, there is an extra $2.50 per tonne being charged for residential waste in 2023, with the new rate being $55 per tonne. The commercial rate is up to $86 per tonne from $82 per tonne. These rates are in addition to the user fee the city charges to access the Tisdale transfer station and Deloro landfill. In 2023, the user fee increases to $3.50 from $3.
A parking pass will set you back an extra $5 per month. The new monthly rate is $60 — up from $55 — for the lots on Spruce north, Third Avenue, Pine south, coalition, library and Algonquin.
Timmins Transit rates are also being driven up.
While the bylaw approved in 2020 shows no rate increase in 2023, the rates were frozen because of the pandemic and the city is currently charging the 2021 rate.
The increase puts the new cost of an adult single ride at $3.50, seniors and students at $3.25 and a day pass at $8.25. For Handy Transit, the cost for a single ride for adults will be $3.50, and $3.25 for students and seniors.
The cost for monthly passes is going up by around $2 each. The new price for adults will be $82.50, and $58.75 for seniors. The cost for students will continue to be $67.

There are also changes to licensing fees.
A burial permit is now $65, up from $60. Marriage licenses are up $5 to $175.
For the committee of adjustment, applying for a minor variance is $700, a $25 increase over 2022. The base application for a building permit is $90, which is a $5 hike.
